Group Therapy vs. Individual Therapy: How Both Benefit Addicts in Recovery

Addiction has become increasingly prevalent as time has gone on. Over the years, substances have been reformulated to be more potent and many have become more prominent as well. And of course, this has resulted in further people falling into hellacious addictions to various substances. Fortunately, while addiction can be extremely cumbersome to struggle with, it can be overcome through the many types of treatment that are now available in our contemporary age. There are two prominent formats of treatment that people can attend, these being individual therapy and group therapy. Types of Group Therapy

Group therapy is when an individual will attend some type of therapy along with other individuals working to overcome their addiction. There will also traditionally be a professional group leader present as well that helps to guide the flow of the session. There are numerous benefits to group therapy. One of the largest is the potential for group members to help each other. It can be therapeutic for individuals to discuss their situation and problems with those in kindred situations. They can also see how others have handle difficulties and take note of this for handling their own. In addition, it helps build the foundations of a solid support network. These individuals within the group can develop strong bonds and support each other. The group leader will be there to guide the session in a good direction and mitigate any conflict or off topic discussions that may not be beneficial. There are numerous types of group therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Experiential Therapy, and Adventure Therapy. While not explicitly considered within the types of group therapy, 12 Step could also come under this heading.

Types of Individual Therapy

This type of therapy is a bit more of an intimate setting, as the sessions will consist of the individual and the therapist. This can be very beneficial because session and therapist are able to tackle more close to home or sensitive issues that may not be addressed as well within a group setting. It is obviously a much better format for those that have problems being around people or struggle with social anxiety. With individual therapy, they can touch upon difficult issues without the worry of others being around or having to interact within the group. There can be various deep rooted difficulties and issues that are part of addiction, and it can take some work to address these, which is why therapy that is focused on the individual can be beneficial in this avenue. Many different types of individual therapies exist, such as CBT, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MFT), or Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
