What to Do if Your Family is an Addiction Trigger


When an individual is able to overcome addiction and begin their long life in recovery, it is a great achievement for them.  While their new victory it is an awesome feat, there is still the factor of ensuring that one’s life continues to be conducive to their sobriety.  Triggers are factors which are typically discussed heavily within addiction treatment, as far as identifying them and handling them goes and avoiding them too.  All of these are great knowledge for a person to possess to be able to continue life in their sobriety.  There can be issues that some run into when it comes to triggers.  One such issue is being able to identify something as a trigger that they are typically unavoidably around quite frequently.  For example, a family member is often a trigger, and recovering addicts have to be able to see this.

Methods to Employ When Handling Family as a Trigger

While separating from family may be an option for a select few, it is rare that a person would want to do this.  Rather, it is better to learn how to properly manage and handle this type of trigger.  There are a few steps to take in this situation:

  1. Identify – The immediate initial step is to identify precisely what your trigger is. Whether it be a specific few family members, group gatherings, certain activities of your family etc.  This allows for you to know exactly what needs to be managed or avoided from then on.
  2. Employ Use of Tools – Employ any coping tools and trigger handling methods that one may have learned in addiction treatment.  These are tools and skills that are meant to help a person know what to do in these situations.  It is important to keep in mind that triggers are a definite part of recovery.  They do exist and thinking that you will not experience them can be a downfall.
  3. Plan – Forming a trigger plan is another valuable tactic. This could be easing yourself out of a conversation, away from a person, or an exit plan for getting out of the environment.  Practicing plans can be a valuable assistance to employing them.  Whether it be forming valid reasons for leaving or reasons you cannot participate or remain somewhere.
  4. Care for Yourself – Maintaining your health and living is an integral part of recovery. Hunger, lack of sleep, and other basic needs can put a person in a very off state, and potentially make them more vulnerable to triggers.  It can be difficult to identify or handle triggers when you are not in a good place physically or emotionally.

When it comes to triggers, one of the most valuable things to remember is to not push yourself too hard.  Do not feel obligated to be around someone or attend a family gathering simply because it is family.  Your recovery and sobriety is the most important thing, and doing whatever you need to maintain that is not a crime.  You need to concentrate on what you feel comfortable and can manage.  Do not force yourself to have regular contact with triggers, as this can simply just put you at risk.  Sometimes a person in recovery may even need to break contact for a while until they can feel less precarious and more comfortable in their recovery, and know how to properly handle their triggers.
